چکیده

We investigate the impact of large floods on civil conflict in a sample of 125 countries between 1985 and 2009, employing GDP growth as a potential transmission channel. We instrument for floods and control for potential spatial and temporal dependency of civil conflict. We find that floods increase the probability of conflict incidence through their effect on GDP growth.

Transitory Economic Shocks and Civil Conflict

To determine the effect of economic shocks on civil conflict, the empirical approach must be tailored to the shocks’ persistence. I illustrate this point by revisiting Miguel, Satyanath, and Sergenti (2004). MSS argue that lower rainfall levels and negative rainfall shocks increase the probability of civil conflict in Sub-Saharan Africa over the 1979-1999 period. I find MSS’s approach and concl...

Economic Shocks and Civil Conflict: Evidence from Foreign Interest Rate Movements

We exploit annual variation in influential foreign interest rates to identify externally-driven components of short-run income shocks in small open economies from 1971-2004 and explore the statistical nature of the income-civil conflict nexus. Our results show that movements in foreign interest rates have important effects on civil conflict risk through domestic economic channels. More importan...

Re-examining Economic Shocks and Civil Conflict

Previous work by Miguel, Satyanath, and Sergenti (2004), henceforth MSS, addressed the question of whether poor economic performance has a causal effect on civil conflict in sub-Saharan Africa. Using year-to-year rainfall variation as an instrumental variable for economic growth, MSS (2004) find that economic growth is strongly, negatively related to civil conflict: a negative growth shock of 5...

Estimating the Effect of Transitory Economic Shocks on Civil Conflict

Economists and political scientists have argued that differences in the risk of civil conflict across countries and over time may partly reflect differences in the opportunity cost of participating in civil conflicts. One way to test for the opportunity-cost channel is to examine civil conflict risk following transitory income shocks. In this paper I propose two instrumentalvariables approaches...

Economic Shocks , Civil War and Ethnicity Thorsten Janus & Daniel Riera - Crichton

Using a novel cross-country panel dataset, we show that commodity terms of trade declines cause civil war in countries with intermediate ethnic diversity. The civil war effects for highly diverse or homogenous societies are negative and insignificant. Since the size of the largest ethnic group explains 96% of the variation in the ethnic diversity measure, we conjecture that a key problem may be...
